Two opinions (my own) on this:

1) The baked beans story is all bullshit 
or
2) In colloquial lingo some syllables are "swallowed" and become silent. For 
example a popular snack of a spicy mix of nuts and dal lightly fried in a pan 
is called "hurigaalu" though the actual description would be "hurida-kaalu"
