I use amazon.com, and i had the same problem with customs in kenya....
however i noticed the customs guys in nairobi didnt bother me if i was
physically carrying the
cds / dvds as part of luggage... (i guess because all the shrink
wrapping was removed....).

if you are a fairly frequent traveler out of the country, you can ship
the goods from amazon
to an address in a european country (the customs duty is nil for
individual shipments below
Euro 50 from amazon.com.... or if you ship from amazon uk...there is
no duty at all since the goods are moving within europe....the same is
applicable for good purchased on ebay).

You dont need to have an address in europe, you just ship it from
amazon to 'poste restante' (c/o the postmaster of little town in
europe)... a fortnight before you are visiting... so by the time you
are in europe the items are with the postmaster... you show him
photo-identification and you can collect your stuff.

i have tried it with post offices in small towns, rather than cities
(in italy) and i havent had a problem apart from strange looks...

I use Amazon for stuff that I absolutely cannot get here. But there has been
an instance where a larger shipment got stuck at the Customs in Mumbai. Got
it out finally but would rather not go through that again.
