here (and in many parts of africa) fatness is a kind of "Africanness". i have met some men who told me they didnt consider a particular woman pretty because she wasnt "african enough".... (read "fat"). Social conditioning at work. If you met someone after a long time, they might compliment you for putting on a few kgs... I have seen more than one person (generally from europe, and generally a woman) take that very negatively as a put-down rather than as a compliment!
