What's the problem with mailman? I've run lists with smartlist, ezmlm, sympa, lyris, listcaster, majordomo, mailman and a few anonymous others, and mailman seems to be not very different fron any of the others on the list.
One of the "anonymous others", I just remembered, was a perl script whipped up (heh) by Vipul - for the first version of the late lamented cooking-pot list.
