The Sony line of point and shoot cameras are pretty good and you can get a 
great deal for about $200-225 with 5-year warranty and a bigger memory card 
from B&H in New York.

Can you narrow it down a little bit? What will the camera be used for?
What kind of photos does the person want to take? What kind of camera
do they have now, and what do they like/dislike about it?

That said, I like Sthitaprajna's list. I have a Canon SD800IS, and
like it as a "always have it with me" camera. We also have a Lumix,
the current model is TZ-3. If you want a more "serious" camera I like
the Canon Powershot S3 IS.

I like dpreview.com for this sort of thing.
