There was quite a good psychological mystery movie about a guy with such a condition, i think it was called "Memento" ... the guy keeps losing his immediate memories, so he keeps tattooing reminders and fragments of memories upon himself.. and also tattoos himself to remind himself to be tattooed...
The best such treatment, for me, is John Varley's _Just Another Perfect Day_ - quite possibly the best SF short I have read.
