... unless they're really good and famous and can earn significant amounts of money... all of which makes perfect economic sense. indian society certainly values art, but there isn't enough material wealth going around to allow all the people who value art to actually earn a decent living out of it, so once they need to earn a living all but the best have to stop their art.
