I've started reading a couple Indian newspaper RSS feeds and I've hit an

The acronym is "RI" and it appears to refer to prison sentences. Is this
"remedial incarceration"?
Remedial Incarceration, indeed! I am sure all the lawyers are having a
hearty laugh over that. Cory, we Indians are still waiting in the wings
to have all the luxuries of the west like minimum security prison and so on.
Very few Indians would have come up with that particular acronym
expansion -- the Indian attitude to imprisonment is that it is
*punishment* not rehabilitation.
In fact, kids don't get detention in schools. They get caned or
something equally terrifying (to them). Not that I am against
disciplining children, but some of the punishments meted out here are
totally outrageous.
