I'm not sure, but I think that a turning point was reached when the company ceased to regard its customers as "those people who are kind enough to provide us with their custom" and started to regard them "those unpleasant people from whom we take money". In particular, eBay now does everything it can to avoid communicating with their users, even though by avoiding all communication they make it impossible to avoid fraud.
