Yes, the place is Thekkady. No, it is not closer than Kumarakom and Thattekad. From Kochi, this should be about 4-5 hours on road. Or perhaps more, depending on the hill road conditions. Periyar is a quite popular (several fancy hotels! and the place can get rather crowded in the weekends) and apparently a well-managed reserve... there are ex-poachers employed as forest guards, tribals are encouraged to grow pepper and cardamom for livelihood etc. Boat rides in Periyar lake (this lake is actually the reservoir area of Mullapperiyar dam, which is also subject of a bitter dispute between Kerala and Tamil Nadu) is the usual thing to do there, because there're good chances of getting to see some wild life this way. This however depends on the water levels in the reservoir. You should ask around for the up-to-date info. They also do arrange for treks into the non-core area of the reserve.
