Unrelated, but it does remind me of one "Ahmed's Iyengar Bakery" in
Fraser Town, back in the 80s. Wonder if this paragon of nomenclatural
integration (like a Puliyodharai Pulav perhaps) is still around
ah, national integration through cooking.
I remember this time when a bunch of my relatives came up with an idea for
a school annual day piece for my 4 year old daughter ..
Dress her up with a muslim skullcap, a christian pectoral cross chain, a
hindu 'pattu pavadai' silk skirt/top etc and have her recite some nonsense
about how india is a country with many religions and how people of all
religions are indians, etc etc.
My version of it (mind, in front of a bunch of very elderly and hidebound
conservative relatives too) was a bit more to my taste.
India is a country with different religions, each religion has its own
cuisine, so I respect each religion by enjoying its cuisine.. islam by
eating mutton biryani, sikhism by eating tandoori chicken, christianity by
eating roast beef ..
Strangely enough, that didnt go down too well.
