When someone pays Rs.3000 a pop, they are not imagining they are helping..they ARE helping. Even if I send my money directly to such an organization, a similar percentage of it might go for such fundraising events. I have come to learn that donations that are "feted" are as important as "anonymous" donations, and the funds are usually worth the effort. When I see the incredibly low budgets on which social service initiatives operate...well..Rs.3000 goes quite a long way. So, they are just two different ways of raising money; some people are comfortable giving one way, others, in another. Whether the NGO we contribute to spends the money properly is, of course, another matter. In Bihar, a few years ago, I was told that no dowry was required for the bride, if she had started 8 or 10 NGO's! I am starting a registered trust to alleviate the overworked hardship of the vowels in the English language. W cn rgnz dnnrs fr fndrsng. Deepa.
