*It never makes sense to me that one of the conditions for registering to
vote is that you must have lived at the present address for six months. Why
is this necessary?*

Logistics?
During the last general elections, I scoured some ten voting booths (there
had been allegations early morning that when one button was pressed, a wrong
light was lit). And it was a humbling experience. Just looking at the number
of people streaming in despite the hot sun was fascinating. And there were
three-four cases in every booth with complaints about names missing etc
(which is a staple story after any election). There were a lot of proposals
to improve the quality of the voting list, but at the back of our heads, all
of us acknowledged that it was a mammoth task.

For instance, to coordinate the names of peripatetic people requires tech
intervention. And this has to mesh with the manual processes in place. And
like most improvements suggested, it has these defining features -- it is
important, it can be done, and it will be hell to implement and maintain.
But don't get me wrong -- this is not an excuse for inaction. It should be
done. All I am saying is that the response to it being a work in progress
could be more nuanced.
