I have found that books that tangentially approach the topic of with anecdotes, allusions etc are more enriching than some text that lists down the tenets of Buddhism in a bland fashion. These are books I have read and like (in no particular order). - Pankaj Mishra's An End to Suffering: The Buddha in the World [1] - Herman Hesse's Siddhartha - Osamu Tezuka's Buddha manga series [2] - Asvaghosa's Life of Buddha (Clay Sanskrit Library edition)[3] - Mushashi [4](this is a long-winded Samurai epic and is not focused on Buddhism. But a determined reader will find a *lot* of insights that are ultimately derived from Buddhism) - If the Buddha Got Stuck [5]. I see it on my list, but I cant remember much from what I read. But it is highly rated on Amazon.
