Small wires crossed here, Heather: _The Year of Rice and Salt_ is
Robinson's, not Stephenson's.
 
Also, Sruthi et al.: to read the passage about cereal in
_Cryptonomicon_, this link may suffice:

I read the first two books of Robinson's Mars series, then completely
lost interest about two chapters into the third book.  I've read
everything of Stephenson's at least twice.
