The social construction of whiteness is a curious thing.
Half of my family is from the Middle East. I've heard more
than one person ask "are Arabs white?"

Arabs, I say, have "contextual whiteness". In an airport, they're not,
but in a restaraunt if they're in the company of affluent Europeans,
and are freshly shaven, then yes... and pass the hummus.

Jews and Arabs are both Semites, but when they're shown together
on the nightly news in the USA, Arabs are clearly "the other",
and their lives are not seen as equally precious.

On the East & West coast, I'm a full-fledged white guy, but down
in South Carolina or Alabama? Nope, not so much.
