What I've understood of the discussion so far -

1 - EVMs are not perfect
2 - therefore electoral systems using EVMs are not perfect
3 - systems NOT using EVMs are not perfect either; it is a matter of testing
/ perception / context as to which system is closer to perfection

I know this is simplistic. But my own mental processes, being nowhere near
perfection, favour simplicity.

Perhaps the Kissinger option is the best. You know the one I mean? Back in
the 70s he was asked how he felt about the fact that, despite being one of
the most important men in American politics, he could not become President
because he was not a natural-born US citizen. He replied "You know, the
Constitution does not specifically bar the office of Emperor of the United
States."
Good option. At least he wouldn't have to bother about chads, cads and EVMs.
