I had the opposite experience at a Japanese restaurant in the Maldives.
It had japanese cooks and made a great show of authenticity. However, a
rice dish had what seemed to be a fistful of finely chopped green chili
in it - too much to eat even for a chilihead. This was mystifying, as it
it did not correspond to my knowledge of Japanese food.

The chef then dropped by our table, and casually mentioned that he
noticed that we were Indian, and therefore had put in lots of extra
chili into the dish as a means of making us feel at home. Er...thanks,
but don't do me any more favours.
