I'm largely self taught. I picked up German from WWII novels, Italian from 
mafia movies (and Eco!), and, of course, all my Shakespeare quotes come from 
Wodehouse.

Well, I did study Kannada and Hindi... German and Latin are
beyond me- after all the Europeans don't insist on studying
