I had a weird encounter with this. When we moved to BLR, the owner of a house we were looking to rent, wanted only vegetarian tenants. By the time we found out I'd nearly printed the agreement. Since the owner lived in HK/Singapore, the broker said we could just pretend we were veg. Except the owner's son who I'd spoken to had already begun following me on twitter and just that morning I was raving about a beef burger. Even if I wanted to pretend (who does?) I couldn't. Social media eventually helps enforce social norms :)
