Sholay was described by some in the US as a cult film which confused me. I thought a cult film was one that was a commercial failure but was popular with a small group. I always thought of it as an underdog movie, solely because of Fight Club. The movie profited something like 40 million, rather than being a commercial failure. I think the definitive objective standard may be underperformes in the box office but does extremely well in home viewing sales.
