By the same token, private individuals and private companies all come under national or sometimes what is (laughably) called "international" law. Entities who make and implement those laws (typically governments) are free to impose whatever rules they want. And if they choose to crack down on certain activities of certain private individuals or companies, it can be seen in the same spirit of "freedom to make and impose rules" that private companies enjoy. Incidentally, I had an interesting experience when I sent out the original message that started this conversation. The message, containing quotes from the Independent of the UK was full of words like Al Qaeda and Jihad. When I click send (using Evolution) I get the message "sending" and a percentage figure which stops at 100 and after a short gap the message vanishes into the "sent" mail folder. I am presuming here that this happens after Evolution receives as acknowledgement from gmail that the mail has gone through, but I am not sure of that. In this case the message stopped after 100% and the message failed to vanish into the sent mail folder. I waited for a bit and downloaded some email that included your reply, indicating that the mail had indeed gone through and then I simply cancelled the hanging "send mail" message. I was just wondering if my email with all those code words that are supposed to make the NSA, CIA, FBI etc prick up their ears was being handled differently by gmail. Maybe I am imagining things. If the same thing happens with this email that has the same words - maybe there is something going on.. LOL shiv
