I am diabetic and have a diet that has the following restrictions :

Vegetables rather than fruits (starchy vegetables in small amounts except
sweet potato which is actually good)
fruit not juice
no candy, no sweets (i am easily addicted so I prefer not to taste sugar at
all-can't do moderation)

the thing that makes the most difference is eating the same thing in the
same quantity at the same time on this diet.

Then your body knows how much of a load to expect and tailors its response
accordingly.
