I recently decided to not read any book not older than 5 years
I was amused to read Kleene's "Representation of Events in Nerve
Nets and Finite Automata" paper (ca. 1951) recently -- when I was
young, "neural nets" were all the rage because it was claimed they
might somehow come closer to wetware than traditional computers, but
in this paper Kleene is developing finite state automata theory
explicitly to model biological neural processes.

(in other late '40s, early 50's developments, see Grey Walter's
turtles ... which I would guess inspired not only the virtual LOGO
turtle but also the shape of BBC Daleks)
