Human history and pre-history is filled with some terrible (or terribly
arbitrary) decisions made by terrible people that were succcessful in terms
of the survival of the species.

I would even argue that we ended up populating every corner of the world
because of innumerable trade offs of short-term survival of the individual
or family or tribe over that of global good. And it is this short-term
outcome maximization selfishness that has led us to exterminate species and
cook the planet.
