Thoughts?
I like the man's brain, and enjoy spending time inside it. I read even
his bad books because I like to hang out with him.
He's done a lot of thinking about alternative economic and social
systems, and it permeates his work. It's probably radicalized me as much
as anything except growing up in Berkeley.
It's good to see him coming out of the science fiction cave and speaking
seriously about the real world. We need his type of thinking to move us
forward.
I've met him (almost as cool as meeting Ursula K. Leguin), and he's
clearly a thoughtful, compassionate person. He reads as straight Davis
(CA), and he has a child who lives in the Santa Cruz area.
The neoliberal model that has shackled our thinking for the past 50
years is showing its deficiencies, and it's time to move on.
KSR is an idealist. His best solutions will probably never happen, but
it's good to have that model before us as we figure out what will.
Revisioning work, and the distribution of goods, is past due. It would
also be helpful to reconsider the economics around real estate.
Right now, I'm thinking it would be cool to get a mob of middle-aged
white women to tear down the Wall Street bull.
