Scott:

I was able to get a copy of the manual from which I deduced the reason why
the BT-6 is expensive. It is crystal and cpu (computer proccessor unit)
controlled. The waveforms are programmed via PROMs (programmable read only
memory). This also means that it is very easy to improve via software
control at a later date.

By the way it is $395 US and not $500 which is Cdn. Most others, I believe,
use use less precise timers, such as NE555's ($0.50)+ other mundane parts,
so are much cheaper...

Reading some of Dr. Beck's stuff it appears that accuracy is important
altough these things will still work with sloppy designs as the brain is a
high Q system (which simply means that it is able to pull out the correct
frequecies from a large pool of frequencies (square waves)), however,
better designs will be more effective and less work for the brain.

I must add, however, that even with crystal and cpu control one could make
it for about $50 parts, but labour and design ara different matter! And the
BT-6 is not the rip off CS units are when you take in labour and
hardware/software design issues. If you design and make your own it could
cost about $50 so don't expect others to give free labour etc.

BTW the April 1997 "73 Amature Radio Today" magazine has nice AC CS and CS
quality measuring designs.

I will be most interested in your experiance with the brain tunner just
make sure that there is good contact with the electrods!
