Hi Listers, Trying to catch on things. Saw interesting postings on nickel etc, etc. Been checking up on it, nickel as a metal only, not in compounds with other toxic things. Started by going to Texas A&M at College Station library.Nothing in 50,000 books in their Tech Section had anything indicating any nickel toxicity.Next day went to Texas Medical Center Library in Houston. Went thru it with out finding anything on nickel toxicity, pure nickel, not compounds.Nada. Called CDC (Center for Disese Control)in Atlanta. They said never heard of it being toxic and had no case of it reported. Not satisfied yet called the Poision Control number it the phone book,Its an 800 number for Cleveland. They never heard of it and had no cases reported. Not to leave any stone unturned called ATCC (American Type Culture Collection) in Rockwell,Maryland. They have over 50,000 Cells of all kinds in cold storage(-321f).Asked if they had any cells damaged by nickel toxicity in their collection. Didn`t have any, never heard of it and if they did they would send me samples for research. Thats what they do, store and provide research samples for labs ,hospitals or clinics for testing. So much for the toxicity of nickel. About heating elements, most elements today are encased. The heating wire is inside a ceramic tube and that is inside a steel tube, like on your electric stove. The only place you will see an exposed Nichrome wire nowadays is in your toaster. It will glow red hot. However no nickel atoms are coming off of it,its not up to its boiling point(2900C). If its not boiling it won`t evaporate. Yes I know water evaporates without boiling. Thats because its vapor pressure is higher than the air,if its boiled its V.P. gets much higher and it evaporates much faster. However nickel is a solid not a fluid. It will become a fluid at 2900 Degrees C and under go vaporization. Its interesting to note that the latest research shows that nickel is now a trace element for plants and animals. Legumes (peas, beans and soybean, clover etc) need it to grow, without it they die.I eat all those foods everyday so its obvious it,nickel, must be in me in trace amounts and without it I would have some medical or nutritional deficiency. Nickel is used in heating wire because it will not combine with OXYGEN and not oxidize (burn up), a plain iron wire will oxyidize and burn up is a short time.
