My daughter who is Registered Nurse gave me this... That is one truth of gram positive and gram negative bacteria. Teichoic acids are present in gram positive bacteria, but are absent in gram negative bacteria. Teichoic acids consist primarily of an alcohol and phosphate. There are many characteristics that define gram negative or gram positive... ...such as thickness of peptidoglycan layer, fat/protein content, outer membrane, resistance to drying, and the list goes on. One of the main characteristics is the type of toxin that is produced by the bacteria. Gram postive produce exotoxins, and gram negative produce endotoxins. My source was "An Introduction To Microbiology," third edition......authors Totora, Funke, & Case....pg.84. Gig -- The silver-list is a moderated forum for discussion of colloidal silver.
