I'm treating one of the fish from my aquarium!

I have a small (3 gallon) jar I'm using as an aquarium. It's stocked
with two small catfish and four glowlight tetras, little fish about
3/4 of an inch long, and a few plants.

One of the tetras swelled up a bit, it's right gill flap stuck out
some, and it's respiration was labored. The other tetras were chasing
it and picking on it. It's likely to have a bacterial or parisitic
infestation.

I set up a 1 gallon jar with a filter, marbles for gravel, and a
plastic plant -- as inert an environment as I can. I've transferred
the little critter and have given it 1/4 teaspoon of 24ppm CS each
day for 4 days.

It's not dead yet! It's seems comfortable, not being hassled by the
other fish, and is getting settled in its new environment. The first
time I put in the silver, the fish seemed to react a bit tensly. That
might have been a reaction to the change in the "feel" of the water.
It's oblivious to the silver now.

The miniature filter has charcoal in it, so I'm probably just sucking
the silver right back out. Which is why the daily dose. I'm going to
remove the filter carbon soon, and go on from there.

I wouldn't treat the other tank because of the effect the silver
would have on the biological filter in the gravel. The dieoff would
destroy the eco-balance in the tank!

Anyway... Something new and different in the CS and pets column!
