Dear List Members,
I really could use some input for a difficult problem my husband has if
anyone has any to give. He fell down the stairs five years ago and has had
two back surgeries to correct his shattered L5 (5th lumbar). The most recent
surgery was fusion of the L5 (2 1/2 years ago). The surgeon was able to
reduce the pain enough to allow my husband to be on rather minimal pain meds,
but told him he would be on pain meds for the rest of his life.
We've moved away from that city and now my husband can't find a doctor
willing to accomodate his need for pain meds. He takes 4-6 Ultram
(non-narcotic pain med) per day and 1-2 Tylenol 3 (with codeine) at night.
Ultram is expensive and the HMO makes you walk thrugh fire to get it. Doc's
apparently don't like to prescribe Tylenol with codeine because they have the
DEA breathing down their necks.
Would there be something -- like aloe cream with CS -- that I could use
on my husband's scar externally to help him with pain or the alleviation of
developing scar tissue? Since this is a "mechanical" problem and not a
systemic problem, I find that I'm at a loss as to how to help him. But he is
left practically begging and pleading for adequate pain meds. Steroid
injections into his spinal column do not help -- he's had that difficult
procedure twice. A stimulator would not work for him because my little
hand-held stimulator gives him enormous pain on any area of his body. He
assumes that's because he'd had a bad 220V shock some years ago which changed
his em field (he stops most watches).
Anyway, I really would appreciate any ideas any might have. Thanks.
Samm
