Janis, I think that your Dad might be too worried about the 9-volt batteries running down quickly. I have heard that they last a very long time for this. I haven't made a lot of CS yet myself but I have used my current (pun) batteries for probably about 6-8 hours and according to my voltmeter they are still fully charged. It sure seems that these little batteries would be a lot easier to deal with than getting under the hood and hooking up a rig to the car battery.
