I recently purchased a distiller, on the second batch my "distilled water" measures 9.2 ppm on the Com 100 The filtered water I began with measured 762 ppm and the unfiltered water at 783. So the distiller is doing something, but not enough to use for CS.

Congratulations on getting a distiller! I still buy all mine. The money I've spent could have bought me several by now, I'm sure. <LOL>

It takes 20.26 watt hours to raise 1 ounce of water to boiling and boil it away. There are 128 ounces in a gallon, so it takes 2.6 KWH to boil a gallon of water. If you assume 80% efficiency then that will require 3.25 KWH of electricity. At 10 cents per KWH that comes to 32.5 cents. Now if this is done in the summer additional energy of about 8 cents will be required to move the heat outdoors with the air conditioner. This gives an energy cost of around 40 cents per gallon of water. Distilled water is available at our Kroger at 67 cents plus 9% tax, so it is 73 cents. The savings is only about 33 cents a gallon then. The cost of the water is ignored because it is trivial.
