My wife has suddenly developed this in two spots on the back of her head. This is "spot baldness" not general thinning or overall baldness. The areas in question do not appear to be inflamed. We noticed the first one about two weeks ago, and the second just yesterday. The odd thing is that both places appear to have new fine hairs growing in them. They are not truly bald, it appears the old hair fell out and new grew right back in, but right now it's very fine so it looks like a bald spot.
She is 49, soon to be 50, in the throes of menopause (extended) and in generally good health. She has always had a very thick head of hair. She always lost some after childbirth and it always grew back. She is a dark brunette just turning grey enough to have a shine on her hair. My reading indicates that 50% of all cases of this self-rectify. I am wondering if a fungus is responsible. I realize this can be stress induced, too much strees causes compromised immune system, latent fungus/disease is just waiting for opportunity*. There's been plenty of stress here to go around for the last year. Kids are growing up, moving out, going to college, piles of paperwork to fill out. She loves her job but some things have gone awry there, she was blamed by some jealous persons but her boss knew better. Local and national housing woes have T-boned my business, money has been tight. Both our parents are getting older and need more attention. I have been dealing with debilitating leg pain for a long time but have recently beaten most of that. Stress, stress, stress. Geez after all I just told, maybe she really is pulling her hair out;>) (*Related condition: It runs in my paternal side for a fungus to attack the palms of the hands when overstressed, yielding peeling skin. I beat that years ago by getting tough as nails and never letting anyone/anything bother me without I put an end to it. She is not so natured, nor do I wish her to be.
