Allow me to throw a little unrest in this topic:
It is now (by freethinkers...!) considered that the memory is not only situated
IN the brain,
but also 'around' the physical body .. in the subtler surrounds.
This may either cause the well-known laughter - or open wide new approaches to
this question.
Consider for example (I have mentioned it before) that we are not 'pulled'
towards the earth by gravity,
but we are 'pushed' towards the earth by a force in the universe.

I mentioned gravity just to show the possibility of other views.
