It's "We don't know what it is"
We're only told what it isn't, in layers of devious.
So, danger cannot be assessed, only guessed at as we try to guess what it is.
Even if we did know it was "Sodium Chlorite", we still don't know the
dangers other than what we've been told by a passionate explorer and "his"
chemist who may not be a bio-chemist.

If you have some, you have a better chance of making a better guess by
doing some tests and doing some research on the various interactions with
various things.
Long ago I ran across a back packers water treatment kit. It contained
Sodium Hypo Chlorite [Chloride?] [swimming pool Chlorine] and Hydrogen
Peroxide.
Instructions: Add x amount of the "bleach" to the water, wait a while,
then add x drops of the H2O2 to neutralize the bleach flavor.
I would expect there to be a release of Chlorine gas. [I didn't buy one, it
was expensive ]
Add a drop of H2O2 to a sample of whatever it is you have and sniff.
If you smell Chlorine, it's a Chlorine compound. If you don't, you still
don't know. The test could be flawed.
It could also be a Calcium Chlorite but should act about the same while
not being a Sodium/Chlorine compound.
Step by step elimination.
I find it better to not buy things that tell what they aren't and not what
they are.
What happened to product labeling laws ?
Hiding info behind a trademark is one thing. You can dig info out of the
poison control registry to at least get close and find analogs.
