Five strokes equal one word. There was also a penalty for making mistakes. The only reference I could find is below (-10 words for each mistake). Dan Calculating Net Words Per Minute. Count the total number of strokes (each space and each character within the line is a stroke), subtract 50 strokes for each error, and divide the remainder by five to determine the number of gross words.
