YAY! It was the fuse, and there was another fuse inside, right there
just waiting for me to install! I am up and running again. Now to put
the potentiometer in the link before I hook up the power- that should
do it.
For my regular set up I just use 3 9v batteries, a potentiometer and
some silver. The potentiometer is nice because I can change the
resistance if I want to and still keep a lid on the current. Making it
very slowly (.3mA) takes maybe 12 or more hours to get up to 10 ppm or
so. It takes alot less time when I set the pot. current to .8mA.
Thanks! Kathryn

Yup! You blew it.
An ammeter across a voltage source is a dead short.
With luck, if you open it up, you'll find a blown fuse.
Harbor Freight often puts mmeters on sale for $2 or $3, but that won't
help you in the land of Oz.
I like to monitor current by measuring the voltage across a 1000 ohm
resistor in series with one of the circuit leads.
It's readout will be the equivilant current in milliamps.
