Some 40 years ago when I worked in an optical shop, we used acetone to
"glue" broken eye glasses back together. It could actually stick
together a pair of plastic frames that were broken at the bridge. Just
stick the broken ends in acetone until they got really soft, and smash
them back together. Gave people a way to wear their broken glasses while
waiting for their new ones, and provided a much more stable temporary
fix than tape.
Probably not healthy to breath either the acetone or the fumes of the
melding plastic, but who knew? And that was back when you could get a
basic pair of eyeglasses for $12.50. Now that frames alone cost upwards
of $150, nobody will even do a temporary repair.
