   Carpenter ants only chew into moist rotting wood, so if you have them,
that's a sign of another problem..leaky plumbing, for instance...or a
poorly ventilated crawl space condensing ground water vapor onto the floor
joists.  This is why houses with foundation walls now have a plastic vapor
barrier spread out on the ground in the crawl space.

They [and termites] will start in a soft spot, tunnel it out so moisture
has a channel to make the soft spot get bigger, effectively making a sponge
that grows into a bigger sponge.
If the wood is dried out, the colony dies or moves elsewhere.

"Dry rot" isn't really "dry".
