Thanks, Nancy -- my friend (age 78) has had about 40 inches of colon
removed, and has been moving to the kind of diet you are describing.
He is presently eating somewhat (?) macrobiotically -- and had "very stinky
and gaseous stools" before that.
if you'll pardon my medicalese. ;-)
He did 10 days of CS (1 graduating to 3 tablespoons 4X/day) with food, to
help get it to the lower bowel, and has now begun a weekly 1 day brown
rice-and-miso fast. I'm now suggesting CS during the fast, probiotics during
the week. Does this make sense to anyone? After the 10 days of CS, the
stinky bowls smell almost not at all, according to his grateful wife.
Any other suggestions? His doctor is astonished at the turnaround, since he
was literally at death's door and had been sick all his life. We're flying
blind here, but with some rationale at last!
Perhaps it's time to call it "irritated bowel" to recognize the enormous
part food plays in this!

I had problems along this line that turned out to be food related.
Specifically cooked tomatoes, and wheat and gluten grains caused
problems and eliminating them from my diet has resolved my problems.
I've been following the Budwig diet which also helps with eliminating
problem foods and normalizing the metabolism and digestion. Grains
allowed are Buckwheat, Rice, Millet, Quinoa, and Amaranth. I would
suggest an elimination diet to see if specific foods are an irritant.

Gluten is causative in Crohn's and Celiac diseases as well.
