My mother is going thru the same thing with the hip.  I think most of her 
problem is caused from thinning bones though.  The hip plate they have put in 
to support now has all the screws backing out and essentially nothing holding 
it in place.  She refuses to go thru another surgery and at 83 I will respect 
her wishes.  She has to use a walker to get around.

  One friend, after initial discomfort, was delighted with her knee 
replacement.  Best thing out.
  Another had a hip replacement - botched - they wouldn't believe the pain she 
was in - eventually another op - again, a mess, a third op, after much 
suffering, demonstrated the others useless but results not good even so.  So 
she just suffers.
