I saw an ad on tv for a product to reduce human scent when
hunting. It's called Primos Silver XP Scent Eliminator Spray. The
Cabela's ad says:
It is priced reasonably enough.
Dual-action spray eliminates both bacteria caused odors such as body
odor and nonbacterial odors such as smoke and food.
Many such products exist, and most have claims that are marginally
truth, and not the whole story.
All these products should have a lengthy instruction sheet, and I
doubt that they do.
So, ....... for the ones that are interested, I can tell the rest of the story.
There are several steps, I will number them.
1. What the person eats, 24, 36, or for the previous 48 hours. (
discipline is required here )
2. What is used on the body for cleaning, soap, or the lack of it,
or special products
3. How the hunting clothes are washed
4. How they are stored and transported
5. Ideally, the hunter has 5 to 10 suits of hunting clothes.
Each is worn once, then hung up to air and rotated.
A clean screen porch works great. Wear the clothes only Once.
For a remote or primitive camp, just hang them outside in the air.
6. All other hunting items and accessories to include boots, hats, backpacks,
guns or bow and arrows, and anything associated with them,
quivers, slings,
and beware of oils and lubricants.
7. Food in the backpack.
sauerkraut, onions, sardines, could all ruin your day. <grin>
It might be better to fast. Watch the drink also.
It is not small undertaking, few will pay the price or make the effort.
Most cannot imagine the ability of wildlife to see, hear, and smell.
One has to remember their very life depends on all this.
I have a better idea than many because I have done test and observed
the results.
Now, the ace in the hole, I saved for last. I did not read about it,
I used my imagination and did the test.
The best anti scents of all are FREE. They are in the jungle,
woods, and forests.
Foods that the deer normally eat or like to smell. Just cut them
up, smear them on everything, and chop up many pieces on the ground
near your ambush point. ( Stalking is a different matter )
Anytime you get a deer in hand shaking distance, you have
accomplished something.
A buck, you have accomplished more.
A nice old buck, you have accomplished the near impossible.
I have had a few so close I could see the white of the eye, the
eyelashes, and the grain of the tongue, as he pulled in single blades
of grass. Fantastic to say the least.
Spitting distance and much less. 6 to 8 feet,
For the non hunters, any fool can kill a deer, getting the animal in
the position to be killed is
the challenge. Often I do that, then watch them walk away.
Who taught me ? The deer, and one genuine Indian, the best hunter
I have ever seen.
He can call up deer and have them walk all around him. He hunts
everything with the bow and arrow, turkeys, hogs, small game, you
name it. He always gets what he went after.
Plus, he is a preacher, has 3 college degrees, and is extraordinary
in every way.
Still, he has all the instinct and knowledge of his ancestors.
