Greetings virtuous CSers,
This is a wonderful list, because we have all given it our input of
ideas and shared the results of those ideas. Each of us has benefited by
receiving and giving of thoughts and ideas, which have formed new ideas
and so forth.
When anyone comes amoung us and joins in the using of our ideas and
then will not share the result it is utterly disgusting. Its an insult
to the listers who work hard and spend much of their time experimenting
and testing new ideas and ways of making CS. Its a slap in the face and
those who take but will not give have no place here.
I have heard the word *proprietary* used many times as an excuse to
not share. Proprietary is only applicable to chemical formulas,
medicines, and processes, not to machines or physical devices. The only
way to keep a machine proprietary is to maintain complete control of it.
Never sell it or let another person use it out of your sight. It must
never leave the control of the proprietor. The proprietor can only sell
the product of the machine.
Patents are given to protect the *right to make a profit* from a
machine or idea. By receiving a patent the machine becomes public
knowledge and may be used by anyone, but not for profit. The public can
see that the patent has been infringed and usually report it to the
patent holder. If its used for profit the patent holder can take you to
court. When a patent is given the contents of the patent are NO longer
proprietary. It has been revealed to the public eye.
If you publish (write about) something such as a better way to do
something and someone comes along and uses it in a patent you can claim
royalties, since your ideas have been used in the patent. (wait until
there is money to claim). The fact that a person has written (published
in view of all) about something gives a legal leg to stand on as the
originator of an idea. Many of the listers have written about things
that were original to them. It is noted that the people who are talking
*proprietary* have never posted (written in public view, published)
anything original on this list. Hummm--why is that. Leting us do their
research for them? The best way to claim an original idea is to write
about it (publish in view of the public) so as to show that you thought
of it first.
Rarely a patent holder will try to hide details so that an originator
will not see that his ideas are being used. The courts will not allow
hiding of details, its been tried.
I have worked in many industries where the way of doing things was
kept secret by the use of *non discloser* forms an employee had to sign,
and in some cases not allowed to even work in a related industry for a
specified number of years.
If anyone is concerned that the listers will see what their ideas are
being used for, shame on them. We are here to combine and share our pool
of knowledge, not take and hide it from the contributors. We appreciate
that a profit is how people live. So show that your way is better, and
its your origninal idea, there will always be those who prefer to buy a
good product (machine or CS) rather than make their own. Maintain good
will by showing how good their ideas are and how you have used it to
make a better product for them (hey- marketing guys, where are you).
Look at WaterOz as an example. They DO NOT sell the proprietary
machine they make their CS with. And won`t even tell how it works or the
process they go through. They do sell standard CS making machines,
details of which are available it you really want to make your own. All
perfectly legal and proper. People buy their products because they are
as advertized. They do their own research and have excellent marketing
skills. Thats what it takes.
Bless you Bob Lee
