Here, Wayne, let me translate for you! <grin> They have to eat "so many" calories, meaning there's a certain amount of food they have to have in order to keep the body from shutting down and conserving energy. That famine adaptation thing! Fasting may be good for you, but when you're trying to get the body to start letting go of some of its reserves, you have to give it the signal that food is abundant... not by overeating, of course, but by adequate nourishment. I haven't watched that TV show much, so I don't know if they're emphasizing a low-carb, high protein, adequate fat diet, but as much exercise as I see those folks getting it tends not to matter as much since they'll pretty quickly burn off the carbs they do eat and get back into fat burning mode. To address the original question in the thread, definitely learn the virtues of a low carb diet. Find out what good food *IS* and begin revising what you buy; fresh, raw, organic produce, free range meat & poultry, wild game, nuts & seeds, good quality fats... to whatever extent you can afford it. Start a steady exercise program consisting of 10 to 20 minute sessions of whatever intensity activity gets her sweating and her heart rate up, repeated as often as she can do comfortably. No long aerobic workouts, just shorter bursts of varied intensity and duration. Check out thyroid function (morning temperature test...) and look into the whole area of iodine sufficiency and possible glandular supplementation. That's plenty to be getting on with for now! <grin> Mike D.
