The theory that wolves go for the stomach contents first to get the
pre-digested greens is a myth.
Using an elk as an example, the thinnest skin is the belly area and
it is at nose-height. They aren't after the stomach, they're using
the most efficient way to bring the animal down. Wolves in captivity
fed a whole animal remove the stomach and shake it vigorously to
remove the stomach contents. They eat the stomach but don't eat the
contents even when that is all that is left. They do eat the stomach
contents of small prey, rabbit for instance, because they eat the
animal whole. Other carnivores do the same thing.
ALL carnivores eat grass, herbs, tree leaves - but it is selective.
If a dog has indigestion and needs to throw up, they eat coarse grass
- cats do the same to barf hair balls. They also eat fine-leaved
grass (like rye) if they feel the need for greens. Those are
digested. They also eat seasonal fruit off the ground that is
decomposing and specific types of manure which contains digestive
enzymes. That is on an 'as needed' basis, not because some human
decided they HAD to have it.
Humans and most domestic pets (excluding farm pets) have lost the
ability to know what they need to eat and when they need to eat it.
There is a KFC quite a distance from my home but I can smell it. That
makes me think that I have to have some fried chicken Right Now!
Domestic house pets are no different. They smell what you're cooking
and start drooling!
