This article says vitamin D supplementation might make things worse.

 Now I don't know if I should take D3 capsules or not.  I got to lie in the sun 
1/2 hour today since it is 71 and sunny, but this only happens about once a 
month in the winter.  

They are saying that 1/2 of the people are deficient in vitamin D in the 
winter.  But this is natural and how it has always been, so I don't know if we 
should mess with nature.  I wonder if there are any statistics to show that 
there are less colds, flu, and other disease related to vitamin D deficiency 
closer to the equator.  If they really are related to that, there should be
