Hello Bernadette,
Many cases of hip dysplasia exibit similar characteristics....to those you relate as occurring in the dog described. Many different insults could be involved in this case. However, if it was me....I would consider a somewhat general approach...using proven protocols of a general nature. e.g. Alfalfa (granulated) or in tablet form [two teaspoons powder or 12 tablets ....twice daily; Cetyl Myristoleate (CMO), one level teaspoon twice daily or six #2 gelatin capsules---divided into three doses. MSM given internally has been an excellent contributor in addressing all forms of arthritis...and bursitis challenges. However, MSM will, probably, be required in capsule form, or rolled up in part of a cheese slice----as it is very bitter to taste, and I have not found a single dog that will take it as an unmodified tablet. About six large (300 mg) tablets divided into three equal doses (to keep a reasonable titer established in the bloodstream)has demonstrated to be! quite effective---at least in a majority of all of our cases. Dogs, as a general rule, do not limp ("in the absence of physical pain")..... unless there is some form of mechanical dysfunction present. Only when under "pronounced" pain do dogs whine or cry out.....they ar MUCH TOUGHER than most humans. 50% DMSO solutions are, as a general rule, quite helpful---especially in aiding increased blood circulation. Caution: Using solutions of DMSO in greater strength than 50% (unless the area to which it is applied is shaved, previously)...is not recommended, as heavy hair covering in areas receiving 70% DSO, or stronger, are subject very uncomfortable "heating" sensations.
There are several other protocols which could be profitably used, but these are quite harmless and have been highly successful for us over the immediately past 15 years.
BE Well, Brooks.
