Back in February I posted on argyia referencing a document, Appendix 9
of "Spacecraft Water Exposure Guidelines for Selected Contaminants:
Volume 1" (http://www.nap.edu/catalog.php?record_id=10942). There was
one passage from that document that I found troubling and I intended to
do some follow-up research on it. Since then, there have been posts on
reversing argyia and reference has been made to an online recipe to
reverse argyia. The follow-up research I wanted to do also relates to
the substances contained in that recipe.
Well, you know how time gets away from you ..... So I finally looked
into it and I would like to pass on what I found. The passage I found
troubling was:

"Even though silver salts are not metabolized in the typical sense,
silver
salts that are transformed are reduced to metallic silver. It was
suggested
(ATSDR 1990) that the deposition of silver in tissues is the result of
precipitation
of insoluble silver chlorides and silver phosphates and that those
silver salts are transformed to silver sulfides by forming complexes
with
amino or carboxyl groups in proteins or are reduced to metallic silver
by
reduction with ascorbic acid (Danscher 1981). Buckley et al. (1965)
identified
silver particles deposited in the dermis of a woman with argyria as
silver sulfide. Similarly, Berry and Galle (1982) reported that deposits
of
silver in the internal organs of rats were identified as silver sulfide.
Silver
seems to interact with other metal salts, especially with selenium in
the diet
(Berry and Galle 1982, as cited in ATSDR 1990)."

What concerned me was the references to ascorbic acid and selenium.
But first, the online recipe that was attributed to an unnamed person
who had used it to reverse argyia at
(http://www.eytonsearth.org/forum/about7.html):

"3 Vitamin E 1000 mg 100% Natural d-alpha Tocopheryl
1 Selenium 100mcg yeast free
2 vegetarian Vitamin C 1000 mg
1 teaspoon MSM organic
1 super potency Vitamin B 100,
1 teaspoon of Kelp powder"

I have since found a second recipe online that does have a name
associated with it at (http://www.sunstoneherbals.com/argyria.htm):

"A Possible Cure for Argyria
Is it possible that restoring healthful levels of vitamin E and selenium
along with the ingestion of ample water might bring about a gradual
reversal of argyria in at least some cases? I decided to discuss my idea
with a nutritional specialist, Hans Gruenn, MD. After talking at length
about the EPA studies and the properties of vitamin E and selenium, Dr.
Gruenn concluded, "It is a worthy hypothesis that should be tried." Dr.
Gruenn gave the following recommendations:

1. 200mcg to 400mcg of selenium per day is a safe supplement to
take on an ongoing basis.
2. He also advises a high-quality,* mixed vitamin E, at 1000 IU per
day for people over 50 years of age who may be at risk of stroke, and
2,000 IU per day for people under 50 who are not at risk of stroke. I
told Dr. Gruenn that I was taking 4,000 IU a day. He replied that this
was still safe for a strong healthy person. The danger of high doses of
vitamin E is that it thins the blood. This could be dangerous in many
situations where bleeding is hard to stop.
3. Personally, I would also drink lots of water, simply because
that's how the body clears out debris. No one knows if this therapy will
prove efficacious, or if it does in how many cases. If my liver spots
are any kind of indicator, some lightening of t he skin ought to be
visible within six weeks if this therapy really is working. Three to six
months should be a sufficient amount of time to completely eliminate
argyria provided that no additional silver is being ingested. (Since my
conversation with Dr. Gruenn, I've had some additional ideas for getting
the most out of this nutritional therapy for argyria.)
4. 2 tsp. of MSM per day. Sulfur (MSM) binds with silver and can
help to pull it from the body.
5. 4,000 mg. of vitamin C per day.
6. 1 tablet a day of a good quality multiple mineral since this
therapy may deplete needed minerals from the body.
* Most vitamin E supplements are of poor quality and some even contain
rancid oils that will be an additional burden rather than an aid to the
body. Dr. Gruenn recommends a vitamin E that has a mix of d-alpha, beta,
delta and gamma tocopheryls. "

There is a lot of similarity between the two recipes. However, based on
what I found I think that both are fatally flawed and can lead to
increases argyia and not a reversal of argyia. My opinion is:

* Use only a minimal amount of selenium. Something closer to the RDA of
55mcg.
* Do not use MSM!
* Do not supplement Vitamin C!

The high dose selenium, MSM and Vitamin C will all work against
reversing argyia. I may already be over the post size limit so I will
close and explain why in another posting.
