The problem with the "650 pathogens" claim is simply that the vast 
majority of the people repeating it have absolutely *no* knowledge of 
why or if it is true. It's one of the universal bits of marketing 
hype that everybody uses.

The key is to get them to stop listening to hype -- on *BOTH* sides 
of the issue -- and start looking at results. 

We don't have major studies and clinical trials to cite, since 
there's too little money to be made from CS to justify doing them. It 
would be too risky to invest millions in the research just to have 
everybody else in the world selling it or making their own.

In the meantime, we keep piling up the anecdotal results and building 
a consensus of what works, even as a few individual researchers here 
and there dig into the *why*.
